Hazard Assessment
Substance to be substituted: Titanium dioxide is possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), according to the IARC Monographs. It fulfils the criteria to be listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC). Alternative substances: Casein paint is based on milk proteins, celluloses and natural minerals that do not have high risks for health and environment. The substances that are predominant in the minerals white lime (calcium hydroxide), calcspar and chalk (calcium carbonate), clay and china clay (hydrated aluminium silicates), talcum (magnesium silicate) and sodium phosphatehave no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). Clay and kaolin may contain crystalline silica, which is considered carcinogenic if inhaled in powdered form (dust). Talc is asbestos free according to the producers. The alternative substances are not listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC)"
Description of Substitution
The restoration of a several centuries old manor called for materials matching the historic ambiance. Casein paints were used for interior wall decoration. When restoring historic monuments, it is called for highly breathable paints that protect the original materials. Casein paints fulfil this requirement and are hard wearing as well as environmentally friendly. They are free of titanium dioxide, VOC, solvents, acrylic and of mineral oil. Casein paint is supplied as a powder, white as standard, but may be tinted with earth pigments provided by the same producer. It is suitable for plaster, clay (may cause hair-line cracks), wood, sand lime-brick, gypsum board, wallpapers etc. It takes longer to dry than acrylic paints.
Case/substitution evaluation
The paint is free of some of the substances that are known for their hazards and for which companies try to find safer alternatives: petroleum solvents, titanium dioxide, cobalt driers. It does not contain acrylic resins either. From these points of view, this is a successful substitution. Being delivered in powder form, measures should be taken to prevent exposure to dust.
