Alternatives for wood varnishes

Abstract

Alternative wood varnishes products based on water can be identified by applying GISBAU (German hazardous substances information system for the construction sector). Naphtha (petroleum), hydro desulfurized heavy and 2-Butanone oxime classified as carcinogens can be replaced by safer alternative.

Hazard Assessment

Substances to be substituted: The substituted product Lacksiegel Polierglanz has several hazardous properties, which may cause cancer and sensitization by skin contact. It is harmful by inhalation and irritating to eyes. The ingredients naphtha (petroleum), hydrodesulfurised heavy is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). 2-butanone oxime may cause an allergic skin reaction, according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). It fulfils the criteria to be listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC). 2-Isopropoxyethanol is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database.d. Alternative substance: According to the producer the alternative Aqua TL-412 Treppenlack is classified as harmful by inhalation, in contact with skin and eyes. 2-Butoxyethanol is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database. 2-(2-Butoxyethoxy)ethanol causes serious eye irritation and according to TRGS 900 it has a teratogenic effect.

Description of Substitution

Most large producers of wood varnishes offer varieties of products. GISBAU – hazardous substances information system of the German statutory accident insurance for the construction industry (BG BAU) offers advice on how to choose the safest products from a chemical hazard point of view. You can find a short description of GISBAU here on pages 83-88. Products, which are the subject of this example, belong to the group of paints and varnishes. Their basic elements include the following: solvents, binders, colour pigments and various additives, for preservation purposes or in order to accelerate drying (siccatives). Some of these substances are problematic. Manufacturers of construction chemicals voluntarily label their products according to the GISBAU coding system. Criteria for product groups and codes are agreed by employers, unions and producers. Using the product codes it is possible to find alternatives e.g. for a product labelled with M-KH03, which contains the hazardous substances listed above. A possible alternative product, containing alternative substance, labelled with product code M-KH01 is water based sealing varnishes. It is an abrasion resistant varnish for stairs that is applied in a spraying or dipping procedure. It is used as a primer and a finishing coat.

Case/substitution evaluation

The substituted wood varnish containing carcinogens can be replaced with a water-based alternative. Consequently, it contains less health and environmentally harmful substances.
