Abstract

Alternative parquet adhesive products can be identified by applying GISBAU (German hazardous substances information system for the construction sector). In this example parquet adhesive containing acetone and ethanol can be replaced by a water-based product.

Hazard Assessment

The product Wakol K 430, containing the substituted substances, is classified by the producer as H225, H319, and H336. Substances to be substituted: Ethanol is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database. Acetone is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database. Alternative substance: The alternative Wakol D 1680 has no labelling required according to the producer.

Description of Substitution

Most large producers of parquet adhesives offer varieties of products. GISBAU – hazardous substances information system of the German statutory accident insurance for the construction industry (BG BAU) offers advice on how to choose the safest products from a chemical hazard point of view. You can find a short description of GISBAU on https://osha.europa.eu/en/publications/reports/312/viewon pages 83-88. Products, which are the subject of this case story, belong to the group of installation products. They included surface treatment agents for wood floors, wood preservatives, paints and coatings. According to Giscodes installation products can be categorised into twenty seven hazard classes (product codes): D1 - Solvents-free, dispersion installation products D2 - Low solvents, dispersion installation products, aromatic-free D3 - Low solvents, dispersion installation products, toluene-free D4 - Low solvents, dispersion installation products, containing toluene D5 - Dispersion installation products, containing solvents, aromatic-free D6 - Dispersion installation products, containing solvents, toluene-free D7 - Dispersion installation products, containing solvents, containing toluene S0,5 - Installation products, high in solvents, solvent content controlled S1 - Installation products, high in solvents, aromatic- and methanol-free S2 - Installation products, high in solvents, toluene- and methanol-free S3 - Installation products, high in solvents, aromatic-free S4 - Installation products, high in solvents, methanol-free S5 - Installation products, high in solvents, toluene- und methanol-based S6 - Installation products, high in solvents, containing toluene RS10 - Installation products, containing methoxy silane RE0 - Epoxy resin dispersions RE1 - Epoxy resin products, solvent-free, sensitizing RE2 - Epoxy resin products, low in solvents, sensitizing RE2.5 - Epoxy resin products, containing solvents RE3 - Epoxy resin products, containing solvents, sensitizing RU1 - Solvent-free polyurethane installation products RU2 - Low solvent polyurethane installation products RU3 - Polyurethane installation products, containing solvents RU4 - Polyurethane installation products, high in solvents CP1 - Putty, based on calcium sulphate ZP1 - Products containing cement, low in chromate ZP2 - Products containing cement, high in chromate Manufacturers of construction chemicals voluntarily label their products according to the GISBAU coding system. Criteria for product groups and codes are agreed by employers, unions and producers. Using the product codes it is possible to find alternatives e.g., for a product labelled with S0,5 which contains the hazardous substances listed above. A possible alternative product labelled with product code D1 is a dispersion-based adhesive. It does not require classification. The alternative can be used for the shear-resistant laying of

  • solid wood lam parquet flooring, oak wood type,
  • mosaic parquet,
  • on-edge lamella parquet,
  • strip parquet,
  • multi-layer parquet,
  • wood block
on very absorbent subfloors indoors.

Case/substitution evaluation

Solvents are readily volatile and mostly environmentally hazardous. The users of solvent-containing parquet adhesive are also exposed to these solvents. The exposure can also occur after the isolation. The substituted product is irritating to eyes and may cause skin irritation, drowsiness and dizziness. The alternative is solvent-free and thereby safer to human health and environment.
