You can refine your search after first entry for sector-, function- and process-categories. The case studies are meant to serve as source of inspiration and ideas for substitution. The alternatives are constantly being developed further. We therefore recommend that you to check in each individual case whether an alternative is suitable for your applications and purposes. Substitution of glutaraldehyde with a solution of peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide as a disinfectant of medical equipment.

Glutaraldehyde has previously been used to disinfect heat-sensitive medical equipment in dishwashers. It was found that glutaraldehyde could be substituted with a solution of peroxyacetic acid and hydrogen peroxide.

Reduction of chlorine for disinfection in swimming pools

Chlorine is used as a disinfectant in swimming pools. Chlorine has the advantage of being effective against a considerable number of microorganisms. When adding free chlorine to swimming pool water, however, a very large number of unwanted chlorinated by-products are formed. Other compounds can be used for disinfection, but they are not as efficient and fast-acting as chlorine. But if e.g. silver compounds are combined with a non-chemical alternative as filtration a good result can be achieved.

The cleaning of old frescoes with a bacterial suspension

This case story presents the use of Pseudomonas stutzeri for the biocleaning of mural paintings, for the purpose of eliminating remains of organic material from old restorations or insoluble saline efflorescence. Traditional techniques used in cleaning involve: solvents, spirits, alkalis, acids and soaps, as well as simple mechanical actions (ex. scraping with a scalpel).

Substitution eines Desinfektionsmittels in einem Altenheim

Ein Altenheim nutzte ein Desinfektionsmittel, das unter anderem drei endokrine Disruptoren enthielt. Eine der Arbeitskräfte erlitt Reizungen im Hals und Atembeschwerden. Das Antiseptikum wurde durch ein auf Didecyldimethylammoniumchlorid und ethoxylierten Alkoholen basierendes Produkt substituiert. Diese Stoffe haben keine signifikanten Auswirkungen auf die Gesundheit des Menschen.
