You can refine your search after first entry for sector-, function- and process-categories. The case studies are meant to serve as source of inspiration and ideas for substitution. The alternatives are constantly being developed further. We therefore recommend that you to check in each individual case whether an alternative is suitable for your applications and purposes. Substitution of subtilisins in manual cleaning of flexible endoscopes in hospitals

In a hospital in the Capital Region of Denmark cleaning of flexible endoscopes with enzymes was substituted by a product based on triethanolamine hereby reducing the risk of allergy. The substitution can only be performed if the succeeding machine wash is not based on aldehydes.

Die regionale Gewerkschaft (CC.OO.) führte einen Substitutionsprozess vieler Reinigungsprodukte durch, die im Hauptsitz der Gewerkschaft verwendet wurden. Die Substitution war Teil eines umfassenderen Präventivprojektes, um das Arbeitsrisiko des Reinigungspersonals zu reduzieren. Ein Bodenreinigungsmittel, das den ein karzinogenen und erbgutverändernden Stoff Isobuten (mit einem Gehalt von mindestens 0,1% Butadien (EC-Nummer 203-450-8)), enthielt, wurde durch ein Produkt  mit Isopropanol, einen Stoff der weniger Arbeits- und Umweltrisiken birgt, ersetzt.

Substitution of a cleaning product containing isobutane (containing > 0,1 % butadiene (203-450-8)) a carcinogenic and mutagenic substance

The regional trade union (CC.OO.) carried out a substitution process of several cleaning products used in the trade union headquarters. Substitution was part of a broader preventive project to reduce the occupational risks of the cleaning staff.
A floor cleaner containing isobutane (containing > 0,1 % butadiene (203-450-8)), a carcinogen and mutagenic chemical, was replaced by a product containing isopropanol, a chemical with less occupational and environmental hazards.

Substitution of gasoline with a combination of ethanol based all-purpose cleaner and window cleaner for cleaning of medical equipment.

Gasoline is used to clean medical equipment in hospital and laboratories. It was discovered that gasoline can readily be substituted with an ethanol based all-purpose cleaner. For hospital and laboratory glassware, a window cleaner should also be used for best results.

Substitution of glutaraldehyde with a solution of peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide as a disinfectant of medical equipment.

Glutaraldehyde has previously been used to disinfect heat-sensitive medical equipment in dishwashers. It was found that glutaraldehyde could be substituted with a solution of peroxyacetic acid and hydrogen peroxide.

Substitutions performed at the National Centre for Health Data and Disease Control in Denmark (SSI)

SSI have managed to substitute boric acid, ethidium bromide and ether with acetic acid, a non-mutagenic DNA dye and sodium hydroxide. They are currently working on validation of an alternative to Trypan Blue in cell staining.
