You can refine your search after first entry for sector-, function- and process-categories. The case studies are meant to serve as source of inspiration and ideas for substitution. The alternatives are constantly being developed further. We therefore recommend that you to check in each individual case whether an alternative is suitable for your applications and purposes. A Danish company produces industrial washing machines. They substituted a paint based on epoxy/polyester with a paint based on polyester. This new product is not classified and is much better than the former used product, the technical performance is better and the energy consumption lower, which probably counterbalances a higher price.

Life cycle assessment of three paints

An assessment of environmental and occupational health impacts of a powdered paint, a solvent based paint and a water-based paint showed that xylene, titanium dioxide and TGIC are first priority to substitute. Beta hydroxy alkylamide is suggested as an alternative for TGIC . No successful chemical alternative for xylene was found, but other water based paint systems could be used. No alternative to titanium dioxide was suggested.

Surface treatment in wood working industry

Insurface treatment in the wood- and furniture industryacid-cured primer and top-coating can be substituted with a water based primer and an UV-cured top coating. This reduces the amount of coating used, reduces the solvent emissionby 96 % and reduces the amount and number of classified ingredients with carcinogenic and reprotoxic effects. The alternative still contains a small percentage of an additive that may cause cancer. Further research is suggested to eliminate this.

Substitution von Chromtrioxid und Nickel bei der Galvanisierung von Sanitärprodukten durch ein nickelfreies Verfahren mit Chrom(III) zur Verhinderung der Nickelabgabe ins Trinkwasser

Chromtrioxid wurde 2013 in die REACH-Zulassungsliste aufgenommen. Seine Verwendung in der EU erfordert daher seit 2017 eine Zulassung. Statt eine Zulassung für die weitere Verwendung des giftigen Stoffes bei der Galvanisierung metallischer Sanitärobjekte zu beantragen, wurde beschlossen, ein Verfahren einzuführen, das dreiwertiges Chrom verwendet und vollständig auf Chromtrioxid zu verzichten. Parallel dazu wird die Nickelunterschicht durch eine Weißbronze ersetzt.

Substitution of chromium trioxide and nickel in the electroplating of sanitary appliances by a nickel free trivalent chromium process to prevent nickel leaching into drinking water

Chromium trioxide was placed on the REACH Authorisation List in 2013 and its use has needed a specific authorisation in the EU since 2017.
Instead of applying for an authorisation to further use the toxic substance in the electroplating of metal sanitary appliances it was decided to implement a trivalent chromium process and to eliminate chromium trioxide completely. In parallel, the nickel sublayer will be substituted by a copper-Bakar layer.
