Use of natural materials in vertical sidings

Several natural materials are used as alternatives to cement in vertical sidings. Commercial cement may contain hazardous substances as crystalline silica dust (carcinogen and endocrine disruptor) or hexavalent chromium (carcinogen and sensitiser). Natural elements have been used for centuries in construction with excellent results. These natural materials include soil, ceramics, stone, straw and glass used in retaining walls. The article explains the advantages of each material and its most significant characteristics.

Alternative to thorium oxide in welding rods

Thorium dioxide is used in electric welding as additive to tungsten refractive rods. One of thorium isotopes is hazardous, because is radioactive, therefore alternatives were sought.

Den Ansprüchen eines Skansa-Kunden folgend, entwickelte der Lieferant ein neues Produkt, indem auf einen der Gefahrstoffe verzichtet und die erforderliche Menge eines anderen erheblich reduziert wurde. Darüber hinaus sind für die Anwendung des neuen Produktes keine speziellen Sicherheitsmaßnahmen notwendig.

New injectable mortar/chemical anchor for construction projects

Injectable mortar is used to join concrete construction elements, for example in the construction of buildings. Conventional products contain allergenic substances and require specialist application training. Furthermore, the material has to be dealt with as hazardous waste. Following environmental demands from one of Skanska’s clients, the supplier developed a new product, which involved the removal of one hazardous substance and the significant reduction of another. In addition, the new product requires no specific safety measures during application.

Alternatives for concrete release products

Alternative concrete release products based on mineral oil can be identified by applying GISBAU (German hazardous substances information system for the construction sector).
