Search for Successfully Implemented Alternatives

You can use the free text search function to find information in the case story database. Most suitable are: substance name and other substance identifier (EC- and CAS-number). You can refine your search after first entry for sector-, function- and process-categories. The case studies are meant to serve as source of inspiration and ideas for substitution. The alternatives are constantly being developed further. We therefore recommend that you to check in each individual case whether an alternative is suitable for your applications and purposes. If you are aware of any other relevant information that is not mentioned in the current case story, please contact SUBSPORTplus.

A safer alternative to protect wood from moisture.

This substitution example is based on a patent registration document. The invention relates to a mixture protecting wood from moisture. The mixture contains crude tall oil or another oil containing free fatty acids and/or resin acids. Present in the wood protecting mixture is also at least one other substance from a group including native neutral agents of wood and salts formed by di- or polyvalent cations. The details for how to make such a mixture is described in detail below.

Chemical treatment of rubber, wood, leather or metal which protects, preserves and renews the surface of the material. An alternative to carbon black.

This document describes a process for protecting, preserving and renewing surfaces, especially rubber and other natural and synthetic polymers including wood, leather, painted surfaces and metal. The material to be treated is soaked with an aqueous solution of substituted or unsubstituted dimethylpolysiloxane. This is done in several stages with other solutions such as diethylene glycol and/or glycerine. This treatment reduces the impact of deleterious effects such as ozone, ultraviolet radiation and environmental causes to the appearance of especially rubber parts used for example in automobiles.

Glues from renewable resources for panel board manufacture

Urea-formol adhesives are largely used in the wood products industries. Construction materials are the main source of formaldehyde emissions in the indoor environment. Therefore, it is necessary to find new natural alternatives to produce wood adhesives. The project allowed developing and validating extraction process for tannins, based on aqueous extraction, and lignin. These extracted compounds were successfully inserted in adhesives to develop a formula without formaldehyde. The mechanical properties of the panel board produced with this new adhesive responded to European standard.

The substitution of diffusible raw materials in the UV hardening varnishes for wood furniture

Danish furniture manufacturers use lacquers that cure by means of ultraviolet radiation as the most frequent surface treatment of wooden furniture. A shift towards monomers and acrylates with a higher molecular weight means that the acute toxicity of the UV lacquers is reduced. The monomer and binder replacements could be performed without considerable technical or financial consequences for the varnish manufacturer as well as for the end user.

A wood treatment product completely free from heavy metals, halogenated and phosphorus compounds. Gives flame retardant properties and protects against rot fungus.

In order to protect wooden material against rot-fungi, biocides such as copper, chromium and arsenic, are commonly applied through vacuum-pressure impregnation. These biocides affect not only rot-fungus, but most living creatures being close to the treated material. OrganoWood is a wood-treatment product, completely free from biocides, that renders the wood inaccessible for rot fungi by binding to the surface of the wood fibres. OrganoWood also confers good flame retardant properties to the treated wood without use of halogenated and phosphorus containing compounds.
