Eco-friendly production of waterborne paint

  • Date 2021-06-01

In May 2021, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency published the report „Eco-friendly production of waterborne paint“.

Focus of the project was to improve the sustainability of paint production through reduced use of biocides and minimisation of resources. Biocides, like isothiazolinones, are used as in-can preservatives to avoid spoilage of the paints due to growth of bacteria or fungi. Due to evaluation of active substances under the biocidal products regulation in the EU in the recent years the number of available biocides (as in-can preservatives) has been decreasing. There is concern that the risk of microbiological contamination of paint may increase with the decreasing choice of biocides. With the purpose of reducing the risk, the project has focused on the causes of spoilage and explored possible solutions to reduce the use of biocides.
