UBA-Report on the substitution of PFOS in surface treatment of metals and plastics: now available in English

  • Date 2022-02-04

In a project of the German Environment Agency (UBA) it was determined that in Germany approx. 1000 plants for chromium plating and pickling of plastics are in operation in which PFOS has been replaced by 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTS) across the board. There are already many process alternatives for the use of wetting agents or Cr(VI). The results of the project can be used, among other things, for the reporting obligations according to the POP Regulation and for the exchange of Best Available Techniques at EU level. In the project a comprehensive overview of chromium-plating and plastic pickling plants was collected. The aim of this research project was to determine the state of the art in chrome plating and plastic pickling as well as process alternatives.
