  • Date 2024-01-12

IRISS (https://iriss-ssbd.eu/iriss) aims to accelerate the transition to implementation of Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design concept in Europe and globally.

IRISS, the international ecosystem for accelerating the transition to Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design materials, products and processes, is a three-year project, start date 1st of June 2022. It is funded by the EU’s framework programme for research and innovation, Horizon Europe, under grant agreement n° 101058245. It has a budget of €4.3 million, of which approximately €3.5 million come from the EU, as well as additional funding through the University of Birmingham and Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology. The consortium consists of 20 partners (https://iriss-ssbd.eu/iriss/about-iriss/partners), coordinated by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute.

One of the ways IRISS is contributing to this is through scientific publications. Now, the first scientific publications from IRISS have been published.

The first two publications by IRISS is focusing on Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) and takeaways from Safe-by-Design (SbD), as well as lessons learned from the IRISS value chains.

The publication “Learning from Safe-by-Design for Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design: Mapping the current landscape of Safe-by-Design reviews, case studies, and frameworks” looks at studies and frameworks within SbD to find learnings and recommendations for SSbD.

Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design: State of the art approaches and lessons learned from value chain perspectives” focuses on a comparison of current SSbD frameworks and concepts, and lessons learned from value chain discussions to help provide input on how to implement SSbD in practice.
