BAM: Treasures of the future: Sustainable concrete made from cassava

  • Date 2024-06-03

From 4 May, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) will be presenting sustainable concrete made from cassava in the new "Treasures of the Future" exhibition at the Futurium. The innovative material is part of BAM's research into safe, sustainable building materials and shows how agricultural waste can be used to produce concrete. By substituting concrete, which is responsible for ~10% of global CO2 emissions, with sustainable materials CO2 emissions from the construction sector could be significantly reduced. The project was realized in cooperation with the University of Lagos in Nigeria, among others.

The "Treasures of the Future" exhibition at the Futurium offers a wide range of innovations for the more sustainable use of raw materials. These include, for example, packaging materials made from banana fibres, building materials made from recycled paper and leather alternatives made from orange peel.
